Homeless people: the voters without a voice | Anywhere but Westminster

In the third part of their election series, John Harris and John Domokos go to Southend-on-sea, and find a coastal town with a homelessness crisis. A local charity is making sure that homeless people register to vote, while huge issues scream out for attention: benefit sanctions, abusive landlords, the gap between wages and rents, and the dire lack of mental health services

  1. Raised sometime in Thurrock and Grays, Essex growing up, I always surprisingly was sheltered from all of this. Seeing it years later it's heartbreaking and frankly disturbing. This is not my Britain, this is a tragedy. Could only imagine Cornwall being so economically deprived as well?

  2. 'signed off sick, depression' what about the hard working men and women riddled with crippling depression during the second world war, young teenagers bringing up families etc, had no time for depression.. there is a major mental health issue in today's world but society today is molly coddled.. folk years ago had no time to be depressed had to crack on.. a lot of the time depression or mental health is a scapegoat.

  3. You should have shown the council taking their tents away in the freezing winter. Shocking. It's all they've got. But thank you so much for showing my home town as it is under Tory Britain.
