Comfort Vs. Privacy In A Connected World

The Internet of Things, the vast collection of internet-connected devices talking to each other and completing a wide range of tasks, is getting bigger and more connected by the day. When will the trade-off between convenience and privacy be too much to bear?

  1. In my opinion, it is all insane and an act of suicide… Nothing wrong with the technology, but PLENTY wrong with people's ATTITUDE towards it… If that technology makes you stronger and more SELF-reliant, fine… But if it is replacing you and you will soon forget how to do things without that device, you are committing suicide eventually… I don't like owning anything I can't take apart and fix myself…

  2. Every groundbreaking invention comes with its own ethical issues. There were debates about ethical issues the first time television, personal computer, internet, etc invented and marketed.

  3. If we learnt something about hacking casino technology, was that our brains are the easiest to hack, by using casino tehnology. Now, were's my reward XP coins notification?

  4. Since the Patriot Act keeps getting renewed when it's up for a vote why does anyone that collects any amount of income have privacy? Shouldn't it be that no one has it then since all humans are created equal. Food for Thought.

  5. The question of utility is the biggest one for me. Smart diapers and pet doors are obviously ridiculous, but methinks pretty much all of them have very little utility compared to what's already available. Changing songs, looking up the weather, turning lights on and off… these are simple tasks that already take mere seconds to complete. They could be very useful for some very specific things, but in general the benefits seem so small compared to their energy use, security risks and privacy concerns, among other things; I don't understand why so many people are gung-ho about them.

  6. There's an alternative, called the LAN of Things (LoT) that provides comfort, convenience, and privacy. But the downside is that people have to learn a few things (like how to replace the firmware on a device), and that turns people off. There are choices, but they are rarely publicised.

  7. I never asked for this to begin with, i don't have any of these so called smart devices i never needed in the first place.

The word smart is just another excuse for companies to get smarter to steal my privacy for their little data collection goal to sell it as advertisement.
Why do we downgrade ourselves to these companies demand on what they find suitable for us instead of us deciding what we want?.

  8. I don’t own or plan to own any IoT devices. If I ever need some functionality that an IoT device can provide, either I’ll look for a privacy-respecting option or make it myself.
