Could Libyan rebel Khalifa Haftar set off World War 3? | DW News

There appears to have been a breakthrough in efforts to secure a truce in the civil war in Libya. German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas has announced that the powerful rebel leader Khalifa Haftar has agreed in principle to abide by a ceasefire. The country and its backers are split between two rival governments. One in Tripoli, which is the seat of the UN-backed government of Fayez al Serraj The other is in Tobruk, which is the base of the Libyan National Army led by General Khalifa Haftar. Germany and the European Union are pushing for stability in Libya to help stem the flow of migrants making the journey across the Mediterranean. But it’s a multi-layered conflict involving Russia, Turkey, the US and the Arab world, and there are no easy solutions.

  1. You will hear of wars and rumors of wars, see that you are not troubled, for all these things must happen, but the end is not yet.
There will be famines, pestilences, and earthquakes in various places.

How is it, that we cannot read the signs of the times?

  2. Why "UN backed"? Why not an elected government? Seraj is backed by all types of terrorist groups within Libya. Also 90% Libyan territories and almost 100% oilfields are under the control of General Haftar. Is this the reason for a peace move now?

  3. Ehhhh we (the US) are sitting this one out (hopefully). President Obama allowed the EU to drag the US into the air campaign against Gaddafi and Libya has been screwed up ever since.

  4. Seems like all these reporters want a war so they can wright about something instead of make up storys to start wars to report on. They do it in every situation the falklands iraque afgan northern irland, any thing for a story no matter how many get killed. Then they stand back and call gov for mistakes but yet they start it in the first place. If your looking for all the problems in the world look at the news itn bbc cnn, dw, cbs, there all to blame. I recone we should lock up all reporters. The trouble would stop over night

  5. Russia vs Turkey (but lets worry about Islamist terror) rather than 2 more nations (after US and the NATO alliance) invades Libya and plunders the scraps. Goodness… vultures picking the flesh off a corpse.

  6. AS long as Merkel supports Islamist autocrat Erdogan in Libya , there will be no peace in the region. Neo Ottoman Erdogan has troops in Syria , Libya, threatens with war Cyprus and Greece, promotes Islamism in Bosnia , Albania and Kosovo. He's the troublemaker of the region.

  7. As a libyan who lives in libya and acting like any other simple citizen not like those who are filled with "western culture" , i started to realize that this conflict since 9 years until Now is more than oil and country's treasures…it's More than that literary!
