The Virginia Zoo has a heck of a habitat for their sun bears. Animal care staff work hard to keep them busy with enrichment, behavioral training and sometimes licks of honey while they observe the bears, checking their health and well-being. It is during one of these observations that staff recognized a growth on the belly of Suntil, a 19-year old sun bear. We spoke with veterinarian Colleen Clabbers to understand just what was necessary to get Suntil’s unusual growth removed and nurse her back to good health.
