I wouldn´t mind if a perfect replica (with modern materials of better wear/age characteristics) is used as running stock, while the "identical" original is perfectly preserved (theoretically maybe even in running condition).
There`s just one Tiger 131, wearing it down inevitably leads to small bits of authenticity being lost forever, even if it´s just an idler bearing in need of being replaced by a remade part.
The thing with the copy, recreation or how one want's to call it is, it still makes it possible for us to look at something how it would have been when in use. In the example of the video the "warbird" (a WW2 Plane): not a single part may be from the 40's but still it sounds and moves like it did back then. And that is what people watching such an item are interested to see. For a Museum or a collector, the original is more valuable and interesting, but for people to look at, such copies can be very valuable.

Never mind the bear, when can we get a Finn with helmet and goggles? 😀
All I can say is I had seen reproductions of the Mona Lisa many times over the years. But when I saw the original in Louvre in 1999 I knew it was not a reproduction. Can't say why but you can just tell.
If it matters so much to someone to purposefully increase the degradation of historical artifacts by running an old and stressed hull, those people probably do not understand preservation.
If they'll allow it I'm sure we could find plenty of ex military and other professional volunteers to clear a path in the impact area to recover some of those vehicles. I'd gladly get my passport and volunteer to come over to help.
He's such a charismatic, fun, intelligent guy, Indeed, I love the Tank Museum blokes and he's an absolute star. I imagine he's had a huge role in growing interest concerning the place as well.
"tank museum bottle opener"
Peak capitalism.
That ending was absoulte gold! Thank you for these lovely and informative Q&As.
so the names of the tanks come from the same source IKEAs items names came from: the boss cannot remember numbers.
so a valentine a tiger and my IVAR are sort of related…
I'm glad you looked at the shipping again. I was going to order a collection but the shipping doubled the cost. I have been paring it down.
29:15 "14 days leave for driving for 1000 km without damage" — I hope he got it. When we won one day off and a lift off base in a Hercules after a two months long competition , granted by our eminent company leader Captain Eriksen, Sør-Hålogaland Military District withdrew the win. 🙁
You really are the best!!!
Where did you get those slippers? I need a pair
thank you Mr. Willey
Ship of Theseus could well apply to HMS Victory or USS Constitution. I have heard that only about 10-12% of the timber is original.
However, during it's service life it would have had huge quantities of timber replaced anyway as conservation is an ongoing process. Was the HMS Victory at Trafalgar even the same ship that was launched at Chatham? I think so….
Your body may have replaced most of it's cells during your lifetime. Are you a different person? I doubt it.
How about the Gas ammo, they dumbed in the North sea, after WW1?
Can't say with regards to "what is the original" of course, but I believe that creating a replica and protecting the original examples, as was done with the WWI tanks, is the better way to go. Running Tiger 131 to record footage for a film is cool, but keeping 131 out of risk by producing a replica vehicle would be better (and if eh engine sounds different they could always dub over it in post!)
Ship of Theseus – bear in mind every bit of a human being has been replaced at some point. Our skin cells, hair, blood cells etc.
Love the slippers/sneakers.
