The 90s Pepsi Contest That Turned Deadly

In the 1990s, a Pepsi marketing stunt promised soda drinkers in the Philippines a chance at getting rich. But an error in the campaign led thousands of people to think they had won—triggering rioting, lawsuits and even deaths.

  1. Growing up my grandma's house help ran a small store selling chips and soda; we got two 'winning' caps, one for 1M and another for 500K. In the end we went to the Pepsi redemption center and got 500 pesos (about $10) for each cap instead. It was disappointing to come to terms that you're not getting what you thought you were going to get. but we moved on. and used that 1k for a nice dinner for the whole family instead 🙂

  2. Try eating some Lays and finding out they make wooden potato chips by almost choking to death, then have Pepsi's lawyer tell you he's going to "handle" you….they're corn syrup mobsters.

  3. Pepsi constantly exploits poor farmers in India and the irony is that due to lack of knowledge the same poor people idolize PepsiCo's CEO Indra Nooyi just because she is Indian… Horrible situation but brilliant identity politics by the company
