Sania Mirza, her father’s name was Imran Mirza and her mother’s name was Nasim Mirza. Her father was an author and journalist. She started learning lawn-tennis from her father from the time she was only 6 years old. Sania Mirza attended Naser school in Hyderabad. She graduated from Saint Mary’s College but a real goal was to become a professional tennis player and to that end, she started taking part in tournaments in India. In 2001 she started playing in the ITF tournaments and the following year she won three titles to cement her credentials as an upcoming player.
The following year she won a bronze medal in the view sand Asian Games in mixed doubles she turned into a professional in 2003 and started playing in major tournaments. Subsequently, she won the girl’s doubles title at the Wimbledon Championships and the US Open girl’s doubles semi-finals the same year. The same year she also won four gold medals in the Afro Asian Games held in Hyderabad. She is the highest-ranked female player ever from India, peaking at world No. 27 in mid-2007. However, a major wrist injury forced her to give up her singles career and focus on the doubles circuit. She has achieved a number of firsts for women’s tennis in her native country, including surpassing $1 million in career earnings, winning a singles WTA title, and winning a Grand Slam title eventually, three each in women’s doubles and in mixed doubles, as well as qualifying for the WTA in 2014 alongside Cara Black, defending the title the following year partnering with Martina Hingis
So far, Mirza is the only Indian female player to win a WTA title of any kind, and the only one to reach the top 100 singles rankings. She is the third Indian woman in the Open Era to feature and win a round at a Grand Slam tournament, and the first to advance past the second round. With 42 crowns, Mirza has won more WTA doubles titles on the tour than any other active player. In addition, she has spent 91 weeks as the world No. 1 in doubles. In 2005, Mirza has crowned the WTA Newcomer of the year, and in 2015 she and Martina Hingis were the doubles team of the year, however the following year she performed particularly well in the GrandSlams as she reached the third round of the Australian Open women’s singles tournament second round at Wimbledon fourth round at the US Open. she was adjudged the WTA newcomer of the Year for the season Mirza was awarded the
Arjuna award from the Government of India in 2004. In 2006 she became the first female from India to be seated at a Grand Slam when she was seated at the Australian Open but she could not go far in the tournament, other than a few notable wins, she could not go much ahead in the singles event but at the US Open the following year she reached the quarterfinals of both the women doubles as well as the mixed doubles events. In 2006 Mirza was awarded the Padma Shri by the Government of India, it is the fourth highest civilian honor in India.
In 2008 she won her first Grand Slam Australian Open Mixed Doubles title with Manish Bhupathi. Sania Mirza was engaged to be married to a wealthy businessman named Saurabh Mirza in 2009but the wedding was canceled the same year on April 12, 2010, Sania Mirza got married to Pakistani cricketer Shoaib Malik in2011. Sania Mirza and her partner Elena Vesnina reached the final of the French Open. The following year the duo of Mirza and Vesnina reached the semi-finals at the Australian Open and won the French OpenMixed Doubles title with Mahesh Bhupathi. In 2013 mirza started playing with a new partner CaraBlack.The pair was
successful enough in reaching the advanced rounds of several tournaments the following year. Sania Mirza and Cara Black reached the semi-finals of the US Open in 2014 but won the mixed doubles title with Bruno Soares. The same year Sania Mirza participated in the Internationalpremier tennis league and helped her team Indian aces in winning the league. In 2015 Mirza partnered with Hingis to win at Wimbledon in straight sets and that constituted her first Grand Slam win in women’s doubles.
The pair started their season at the2015 Brisbane International with the top seeds and reached the semi-finals losing out to 4th seeds Caroline Garcia and Katarina Srebotnic in the super tie-breaker after having won the first set.
Mirza paired up with a former partner and good friend American Bethanie Mattek-Sands for the Apia International and went on to win the tournament for her 23rd career title.
Sania Mirza and Hingis kicked off their 2016 WTA in Australia by winning the tournaments in Brisbane and Sydney. In the Australian Open, they were seeded first and won the Doubles title which is Mirza’s third Grand Slam title.
In October 2018, Sania Mirza had delivered a baby boy.
In 2015 she was honored with the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna award and a year later she was awarded the Padma Bhushan India’s third-highest civilian honor.
