CNNi: Coup in Myanmar after Aung San Suu Kyi and leaders detained

Myanmar’s powerful military has taken control of the country in a coup and declared a state of emergency, following the detention of Aung San Suu Kyi and other senior government leaders in early morning raids Monday.
The country woke up to widespread internet and communications blackouts, closed banks, and soldiers in army fatigues patrolling the streets of Myanmar’s largest city, Yangon. Residents turning on their television sets could only access the military-owned Myawaddy TV channel, with all other news channels seemingly blocked.
As news filtered through that the country’s democratically-elected leaders had been detained in the capital, a news anchor announced on the military-owned channel that power had been handed over to army chief Min Aung Hlaing.
In the address, the military confirmed it had detained the country’s de facto civilian leader Suu Kyi, along with other high ranking National League for Democracy (NLD) leaders, in response to alleged voting irregularities in November’s election.
Suu Kyi’s party, the NLD claimed an overwhelming victory in that election, taking 83% of the vote, which granted it another five years in government. The military-backed Union Solidarity and Development Party won just 33 out of a possible 476 seats.
The coup came just hours before the first session of the new parliament was set to open, and follows weeks of worsening political tensions in the country over the disputed election amid rumors that the military could take over.

  1. I feel that the only reason she supported the military was to avoid this scenario from happening because from how she acted before it made 0 sense for her to support the military in the situation.

  3. Its such a shame that the other democratic countries ignore completly on myanmar democratic path just because they think that their agenda on rohinja issue cannot carry out. We have over a hundred ethnicities who do not know whar their basic rights are. How can some one who do not have a clear understanding of their basic rights could carry your agenda while we cannot even come to an agreement yet on national reconsiliation with many other ethnics minorities legalley belong to the country. Any how we dont expect anything from international communities and look up to them any more since they abandoned us on our path toward democracy. Shame on you

  5. the military must be under the president . But here the military arrest the president and our leader without any strong evidence . The NLD party won heavily in 2020 election . #Min Aung Hlaing #hang#theif who have stolen millions of money from our country#stop military coup# . We civillian want democracy. Relase our leader and president .

  6. nothing to do with communist bullshit. There is simply a rich elite all over the world including the news anchors in suits telling the stories. We can’t even tell what’s happening in the US so why the fuck would I believe anyone telling me they know what’s going on with Myanmar

  7. Yeah that’s true . I am from Myanmar and also the electricity are not good even internet connections. Military shoots people that are from Aung San su Kyi side because they keep saying Aung San su Kyi and that how much they hate military.

  8. Aung San Suu Kyi received appropriate punishment because when she was in power, she deliberately did not want to take any action to save the cruelty and oppression of the Rohingya community by the Myanmar army. So there is no point for her to be empowered because she is proven to be a person who has never ruled well and also has never been fair to the society in her country especially to the Rohingya community.
