Exports of cherries from Chile to China have taken a hit, and it appears to be all because of a rumour.
Unsubstantiated reports began circulating on Chinese social media that traces of COVID-19 were found in some boxes.

Goes to show how dangerous the proliferation of seemingly unsubstantiated rumors can be. That journalists acts cautiously with integrity is one of the most important missions today.
I am from China. Sorry to see Chile's fruit growers were impacted by those rumors. I went straight to buy 5kg of cherry imported from Chile to show my support, although I prefer home grown cherry myself. The package comes with a certificate shows those cherries were tested coronavirus free using PCR test.

Such a incredible move of the chinese government, using a revenge on Chile and the geopolitics of american influence in Latin America
That’s what you get when you deal with China!
Firstly, this is not a rumor, it was identified two or three cases with positive result; second, this is not particularly to Chile, I believe the pcr test has become a routine test in China, not only to the import goods, but also internally transported packages. There is also case China cross-province package tested with positive and then the corresponding post office and workers in it are quarantined.

Wtf China?? Australia's cherry growing state of Tasmania has had zero covid community cases for MONTHS! That's better than the current outbreak in China. The only way for cherries to be contaminated is when it arrives in China where there IS covid cases, touched by infected workers handling the fruit! This is what happens when rumors displace facts that are easily verified online (John Hopkin's covid case rates by country)

Its funny that in the beginning of the pandemic people looked suspicious on any goods shipped from China.
Hope this problem get solved for the farmers sake.
China government are expert in sabotage other countries economy, just look at Australia and the problem with their products (lobster, beef, wine), what happened to Chile looks similar. (just week to chinese new year)
