Minneapolis police shooting: Accidental discharge of a gun instead of taser? | DW News

An officer allegedly shot a young Black man after confusing a taser for a handgun. The police chief of the Minneapolis suburb where an officer fatally shot a young Black man told reporters Monday that the killing was the result of an “accidental discharge.” Daunte Wright, 20, was shot dead during a traffic stop in Brooklyn Center, a suburb of Minneapolis — not far from the courtroom where the trial against the former police officer Derek Chauvin for the murder of George Floyd is taking place. Brooklyn Center Police Chief Tim Gannon said that the officer had fired her weapon after confusing it for a taser — she has been placed on leave pending an investigation. “This appears to me, from what I viewed and the officers’ reaction and distress immediately after, that this was an accidental discharge that resulted in the tragic death of Mr. Wright,” Gannon said.

Police clashed with protesters for a second night in the Minneapolis suburb where a police officer fatally shot 20-year-old Daunte Wright on Sunday. The shooting sparked riots in an area already in turmoil over the trial for the death of George Floyd. To prevent violent protestthe city mayors of Minneapolis and St Paul had announced a nighttime curfew on Monday. Still hundreds of protesters faced off against police in Brooklyn Center after nightfall. When the protesters wouldn’t disperse, police began firing gas canisters and flash-bang grenades.

  1. I respect most officers as they do a job most won't. This woman was too panicked to realize she had a gun in her hand. How she became an officer is beyond me.

  2. She knew exactly what she was doing whenever you saw a police say Taser Taser taser you never ever heard of a police officer saying that. Plus she held that gun way out in front of her.

  3. Seriously, remember these words; "Compliance, not defiance". Remember these words, and you will be safe. There is nothing to fear from the police. Just try not to behave like a jackass.

  4. (to James Vespro) Malicious, untrustworthy and histrionic po lice officers create a horrible situation for the PUBLIC… Especially those cops who cannot tell the difference between a tazer and a lethal firearm (apparently)………

  5. I hope she never gets over this and lives with a lifetime of distress because of this. I hope she wakes up every night from nightmares of being in his perspective. That police officer deserves to be on trial with George Floyds killer.

  6. What is wrong with tazer manufacturers that they make them look like a gun and what is wrong with police leadership that they buy them? When I looked on-line they DO have tazers that are NEON in color so that a policeperson can tell the difference.

  7. This will continue to happen as long as cops have guns , cops will continue to have guns as long as the streets are awash with guns , the streets will always have guns as long as the gun laws in the U S stay the same. Having said that , how you could possibly make this mistake as a trained officer is unbelievable. She had it in her hand for a good few seconds before she let off her shot. I e never held a gin or taser but surely wearing them every day you would know the difference??…

  8. After he got back in the car , anything can happen.

Like him speeding off and killing someone in a car accident or running over someone.

The cops messed up on not hand cuffin him or moving him to the back of the car first.

The only one that’s bad is when they killed that guy by kneeling in his neck and choking that other big dude that was selling cigarettes.

  9. Say it with me, resisting arrest doesn't mean "Feel free to murder me, officer". Don't use it as an excuse, that's like a kid resisting going to school so his parents break his knee caps.
