How Does America's Response to Climate Change Look From Abroad? | NYT Opinion

The United States has a schizophrenic relationship with the environment.

It boasts a spectacular system of more than 400 national park sites; a robust environmental lobby; and strong federal environmental law, including the landmark Endangered Species Act, which is credited with saving the bald eagle and the grizzly bear from extinction.

Yet it also harbors a dark side, including an insatiable appetite for fossil fuels; a longstanding romance with behemoth, gas-guzzling vehicles; and perhaps the highest per capita generation of plastic waste in the world.

For the video above, we collated data and other information about America’s posture on the environment and presented them to people from other countries that, in some ways, have made the United States, the wealthiest country in the world, seem like an environmental laggard.

Their reactions? Well, check out the video to find out. But an Indian participant seemed to speak for everyone when he remarked, his face furrowed in dismay, “That’s … that’s America?”

  1. Hi I’m Chai, and I produced this video for NYT Opinion.
I’d love to know what you think about how your country approaches environmental issues, and what you think they could do better.

  2. No, these countries represented in this video are the ones leading the way. America gave up on being leaders. My country of Canada is failing as well.

  3. European countries also buy all their stuff from third world countries, that's why China contaminates so much but their people doesn't neccesarily have a large carbon footprint

  4. Dear woke, trained Marxists – the Cuban people are no longer afraid. Dateline July 11, 2021 – the revolution will not be televised.

  5. A lot of the people bashing the US in these comments sound like they're mad at the general population. Please be smart enough to know it's the politicians.

  6. Poisoned soil, NO water. And we had a elected official Sen. James Inhofe, R-Oklahoma, bring in a snowball during 2014 senate session and thought that was an Iron Clad argument against Climate Change….People bought it. Many of my countrymen and women believe what is presented to them on the TV, radio or a website and refuse to do any reading, research, or even apply common sense to the problem.

  7. The trouble with this is eventually the US will reap what it has sown and it will not be pretty and hit them very hard where as everyone else is moving forward and leaving them behind.

  8. Since u.s is a melting pot and they are not able to behave themselves then U. S nationalities parents ( Mexico, India, all ex-slave trade countries, U. K, Germany, France, Italy, Japan, China, Russia, ecc.) should educate them.

  9. The US has a cultural ideology/addiction that "bigger/faster is better" and "more/new is better", in terms of vehicles, living space, food, possessions, and $$ itself. None of these things actually improve our health, quality of life or happiness, and we don 't have the right to wreck the global climate to keep feeding the corporations that manufacture this vision. I lived in Spain for 6 years and people seemed to have a better quality of life with smaller vehicles and apartments, less consumer goods and machines, more time to spend with friends and family, excellent and cheap health care and education, locally-produced food, art, and entertainment….and. way less emissions.

  10. As an American, I’ve tried to cut my carbon footprint by not eating beef or pork and reducing my waste, and I plan on purchasing an electric car whenever possible. It frustrates me that many of my peers deny climate change and I feel like our country is in an abyss that we can’t climb out of. Living in Colorado, I witnessed the two largest wildfires in our history last October. Seeing how other countries handle these issues still gives me hope though, but it pains me to live in a country where climate change is still up for debate.

  11. Republicans are stupid. I dont know if i wanna laugh at them for being brain dead people or be scared cuz there are millions of brain dead republicans.

  12. I don't believe in climate change it sounds Insanity conspiracy theory but I do hate the oil industry the country to a massive air pollution problem but don't use a conspiracy theory to fight or hate them use the pollution problem they produce climate change sounds like a conspiracy theory ended up by the same people who invented q and on before they got into the violent crazy

  13. This video seems to want to pitch people against eachother based on nationalism. The real issue isnt on any consumer in any country, the issue stems from how each country allows industries to function. Industry > consumers. Yes consumers need to change their ways too, but if all the consumers in the world had better practices we're only talking about %10 of the issue.

  14. Hey rest of the world, if you wanna help Americans, stop vacationing here n stuff and help call our governments and stuff? Because the system is screwed and it's all about white men having power n money.

  15. Um, those last sentiments were very weird. Why would America have to lead the way and set an example in something where it's painfully obvious they're completely unable to and where they're obviously just dragging their feet? I mean, other countries are leading the way and setting the example already. America is welcome to follow the example set.
