Is the US atoning for the darkest chapters of its history? | DW News

The US president is the first in office to visit the site of the Tulsa Massacre in Oklahoma to mark 100 years since an unknown number of African-Americans were killed by a white mob. In 1921 a mob of white people looted and burned Tulsa’s thriving Greenwood district, known as the Black Wall Street. A proper count of the dead was never completed, but some estimates say hundreds of black Americans were killed. Biden says rights for Black Americans are still under assault.

  1. I just want American history to be taught accurately. I want history education to be about WHAT happened as part of the greater explanation of WHY things are as they are. History classes have too long been a triumphalist, "great white males" patriotic procession that erases or minimizes all of the less savory events in the nation's history.

  2. Luke 8:23-25(KJV) But as they sailed he fell asleep: and there came down a storm of wind on the lake; and they were filled with water, and were in jeopardy.
And they came to him, and awoke him, saying, Master, master, we perish. Then he arose, and rebuked the wind and the raging of the water: and they ceased, and there was a calm.
And he said unto them, Where is your faith? And they being afraid wondered, saying one to another, What manner of man is this! for he commandeth even the winds and water, and they obey him.

  3. Political stunt. White people alive today did not have anything to do with this. Stop making people feel guilty just because they have the same skin color as other people who did something bad long ago. That IS racism

  4. Well….too early for reparations… Systematic Racism and killing B people is still going…so..when are we going to celebrate the end of Racism in the US and speak of it as openly as the Germans with the Holocaust?

  5. Why is it ONLY the US is responsible for the sins of the past, is the one to atone? We inherited a British system, and the injustices paled in comparison to the Spanish. But we're the bad guy. Ridiculous.

  6. One needs to ask the question, why are we digging up the bone of the past and throwing them in the face of the living. This has nothing to do with learning from the past, this is about demoralizing western society. Lets talk slavery that is happening today – sex slavery… Don't hear or see much of a outcry on this topic, do you…. In fact, since 3rd wave feminism, self prostitution has gone up. We could have all pushed back on the lockdowns or rallied together against tax on labor or to have a stable currency, so we can all find financial freedom on our own terms, which would do far more for minority groups, then the nonsense that government is doing.

  7. We American Democrats do want to atone. This country needs equality, thats for sure. President Biden is making us proud with this action.
