Activists in Venice protest return of giant cruise ships | DW News

As some countries begin to reopen their economies after months of coronavirus restrictions, people are welcoming the slow return to normality. For residents in Venice, the lockdown has been a blessing. For months, cruise ships have been banned from docking in the historic city. The giant vessels are controversial with residents – who argue they erode the buildings and bring too many tourists. For them, the first ship to arrive after the lifting of the ban was not a welcome sight.
Hundreds of Venice locals turned out to see the MSC Orchestra off. Their message: no more cruise liners near our city.
Earlier this year, protesters seemed to have won when Italy’s government passed a law banning big ships from Venice’s historic center. But there was a catch: The ban would only take effect after a suitable alternative is found, a process that could take years.
Italy’s cruise ship industry is not waiting any longer to get back to business.
For the roughly one thousand passengers on board the Orchestra, the opportunity to finally go on vacation was too good to pass up.
While the return to normal life brings much to celebrate, these protesters hope some things will never go back to how they were before.

  1. I boarded a MSC cruise from Venice Italy. I will never forget how beautiful the view was leaving Venice Italy from the deck of the ship. It was stunning. I can understand why locals don't want cruise ships there now.

  2. Get rid of the cruise ships. Catch a train or cycle around the city. If you cannot get there except by a huge cruise ship, then sorry, you left it too late to go there. Piss off.

  3. If the people who want these ships to go to Venice with no respect for the other residents of the city or area, then these tourists evidently can afford to travel to other places to take these ocean or sea trips. From some readings I did during the 2000s, these ships are VERY polluting, dumping all sorts of garbage into the oceans or seas.

  4. No mention of the tragic incident in June 2019 when MSC cruise ship Opera lost control and crashed into Venice dock and a tourist boat injuring several people…

  5. If countries would invest more in their cities and try to build up their own cultures and histories through art and architecture then Venice wouldn’t be so overloaded.

Cruise ships should only visit once a month.

  6. Your news host is not well informed. He does not mention the other side of this which is that Venetians have been begging for the huge amounts of tourists to come back to their city with an economy in shambles.

  7. Repent to Jesus Christ!

    Are you a sinner?

    Mark 2:17

    King James Version

17 When Jesus heard it, he saith unto them, They that are whole have no need of the physician, but they that are sick: I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.

  8. Venice doesn't need this kind of tourism. Studies show they barely spent some money in the city as accomodation, food and anything else is provided by the ship. As always in Italy it was the corrupt government who earnt from this alone.
