Lithuania facing migration wave on Belarus border | DW News

A growing number of African and Middle Eastern migrants have been illegally entering Lithuania from Belarus. The country says it is finding it hard to cope.

Lithuania and Belarus share a 680-kilometer (423-mile) border. In many places, the two countries are separated merely by low wooden fencing or narrow ditches. Overcoming these obstacles to cross into EU territory is child’s play.

Until recently, this was not a serious problem in Lithuania. According to official figures, just 79 people entered the small Baltic state illegally in 2020 — most of them fleeing the authoritarian Lukashenko regime in neighboring Belarus.

So far this year, however, more than 2,500 people from Afghanistan, Syria, Iraq and several African nations have arrived in Lithuania. Most of them came in the past two months.

  1. These welfare queens in the Baltics, whose total post-Soviet economies consist of remittances and unemployment schemes in Western Europe, paired with off-shoring scams from Germany, are all of a sudden crying wolf when they are being targeted by hordes trafficked through Belarus, a country that has its own domestic industry and pays its bills.

They should have thought about that when they participated in the latest Western scheme to topple the widely popular nationalist government in Belarus, that refused to destroy its Soviet industry for the benefit of the usual Western bankers in in the 1990s.

The open borders people in Brussels need not worry about the pipsqueak Baltics actually doing anything. They know that the Baltics will never jeopardize their welfare checks from the formerly wealthy countries of Western Europe.

  2. Lukashenko is helping the EU achieve its diversity goals, particularly in countries that lack behind on this issue, such as the Baltics. Спасибо, господин президент!

  4. First the West tried to " democratize " the Middle East resulting in endless civil wars , poverty and waves of migration out of the region . Now Lithuania and EU are trying to " democratize " Belarus resulting in a crisis in the former . Some people never learn .
