What is Kidney Health?
The kidneys are a pair of organs located at the bottom of the rib cage. There is one kidney present on either side of the spine.
Healthy kidneys play a pivotal role in maintaining a healthy body. The kidneys perform critical functions in the body, such as filtration of excess water, impurities, and other waste products out of the blood. The filtrate is first stored in the urinary bladder and then excreted by urination. The kidneys are also responsible for regulating salt, potassium, and pH levels in the body. They also control the production of red blood cells and the regulation of blood pressure by secreting certain hormones. The kidneys also help in the absorption of calcium by activating a form of vitamin D.
It is essential to maintain healthy kidneys so that they can perform their functions properly. Various ailments of the body have the potential to damage the kidneys and compromise their performance. High blood pressure, diabetes, and other long term diseases can have untoward effects on the kidneys. A diseased kidney can lead to health problems such as nerve damage, malnutrition, and weak bones.
Chronic kidney disease is one of the most common diseases of the kidneys. It is usually caused by high blood pressure. High blood pressure causes increased pressure on the blood vessels in the kidneys. Over time, the increased pressure causes damage to the blood vessels, and the kidney function declines as a result. Diabetes is another cause of chronic kidney disease. High sugar levels in the blood also damage the blood vessels in the kidney resulting in deteriorated kidney function.
Kidney stones are a very prevalent problem of these organs. When substances such as minerals crystallize in the kidneys, they form stones. Kidney stones can be excreted out during urination, which is a painful process. The stones very rarely cause significant problems to the body.
