3 Reasons Why Nuclear Energy Is Terrible! 2/3

Nuclear energy might be a failed experiment. In over sixty years the technology has not only failed to keep its promise of cheap, clean and safe energy, it also caused major catastrophes and enabled more nuclear weapons while the nuclear waste problem is still not solved.

  1. People always think and act like the world is dogmatic and there is always only one answer. Truth is, with producing energy its not the question which is the best but the least damaging for enviroment and humans. While nuclear power has some drawbacks as stated in this video we should not forget what its trying to replace.

  2. If people supporting nuclear energy were willing to work in uranium mines or as nuclear waste cleanup crew, I bet there would be far fewer

  3. The arguments made by those that don't understand nuclear physics or radiation even boils down to pointing the finger at Chernobyl and Two Mile Island, or even Fukushima.

Let me give a good counter to arguments that claim the technology is too dangerous.

Look at air travel. Its widespread, very safe, and efficient. Air travel however in the 1960s, 70s and even 80s, was much less safe. Mid air collisions for example had a much higher percentage of occurring. Aircraft with cut corners on maintenence protocol or redundancy failures (such as no shutoff valves for hydraulic lines), as well as failures in airport security (such as the Phillipines Airlines bombing in the 90s).

I can easily point to crashes such as the Tenerife Disaster, TWA 800, the United Airlines Sioux Falls crash, the Grand Canyon midair collision, the American Airlines DC-10 crash at O'Hare, and claim just by looking at horrific events such as those that, air travel is unsafe and that we should go back to sea travel or car travel.

But guess what? Air travel has learned, with failsafe systems, layered redundancies, higher tech ATC, updated guidelines and automated warning systems have all made air travel as common, safe, cheap, and efficient as it is now.

Same argument applies for nuclear. Every major nuclear power incident constantly looked at (Chernobyl, Two Mile Island, Fukushima) all utilized less safe and less efficient light water reactors, utilizing Uranium as fuel.

As we move into the future however, there are MANY different options for Nuclear Fission that make it ultimately, A VERY GOOD CHOICE to aid transitions into renewable and clean electricity.

Examples include Thorium based fission, pressurized heavy water reactors, etc.

  4. Kurzgesagt = stop using gas and coal reactors, nuclear power is the future and we should use reactors but stupid humans are afraid cause of chernobyl

still Kurzgesagt = 400REACTORS MANAGED SEVERAL HUNDRED THOUSANDS OF TONS OF NUCLEAR WASTE AND COUNTRIES HAVE NO IDEA WHAT TO DO WITH IT

srsly? nice logic go spend 120k hours of thinking about my comment and record video spending 200k hours

  5. I learn more things at
    Kurzesagt in a nutshell
    Bright side
    Watop
    The infographocs show

Their teaching was more interesting and effective more than corrupted and twisted education system

  6. Our rejection of Nuclear power was a massive mistake, and the environment has payed dearly for it as we continue to rely on fossil fuels for our electricity

  7. How many deaths does fossil fuel pollution cause? If we had more nuclear plants and less coal burning plants how would that have affected pollution death tolls over the decades. I'm not convinced nuclear is any less safe than fossil fuels. And the more I learn about it, the more I see hysteria over nuclear as being a product of the fossil fuel industry.

  8. Nuclear weapons have saved millions of lives. As well as the invention of automatic weapons. Wars went from an every decade thing where hundreds of thousands of military members and millions in total where killed to a small fraction of that amount and not nearly as often. Big battles aren’t nearly as common. And how many world wars have been avoided because nuclear powers saw war with each other as a loose-loose scenario? How many American and Japanese lives where spared because Hiroshima and Nagasaki where laid to waste? We basically were spared half of the Japanese war. Some people have such a narrow field of vision.
