At least 46 killed in Taiwan residential building blaze | DW News

Flames tore through an apartment block in the city of Kaohsiung, southern Taiwan, overnight into Thursday. The city’s fire department told reporters that 46 people found in the building had been confirmed dead and another 41 injured.
Firefighters are unsure of the causes of the fire, but said it had burned most intensely where piles of clutter had been stacked. The fire was successfully extinguished after about four hours, and rescuers scoured the building in a search for survivors on Thursday morning.

  1. Why does Taiwan still make these kind of basic mistakes that could have been preventable? Remember the giant gas explosion a few years back? They had a leaking gas pipe, and their solution was to pour water in the tunnels to "prevent" the explosion, instead of turning off the gas pipes. That's not how things work. Giant building that has its stairwells blocked, housing elderly who don't even have much mobility. Totally unacceptable. Condolences to the victim families. Taiwan you should be better than this.

  2. No need for such a tragedy in this day and age. I don't care if its a 40 year old building. You never build a large old folks home out of wood or without sprinklers. You can bet some major criminal charges are going to be leveled against the building operators and building owners.

  3. If it was a chinese building in china burning, all the clowns will come out and say they deserve it for "suppprting" a communist government.

  4. People are ignoring the facts! Taiwan is China's internal affair, but the two parties are not harmonious! There is no territorial issue! It's the child and the mother getting angry! The US wants Taiwan to destroy this family! The US gets his benefit!

  5. I know who to blame if this situation becomes destabilizing to Taiwan. We know who weaponizes these sort of things.
Show me a list of countries with perfect track records. Not making excuses. Just saying, heads up. MAYBE, handle this with more care.
