  1. I think it’s important to note that the Berlin accent can be so strong, that it makes some words unrecognizable.
    For example:
    “Altah, waz loss?”
    “Nah ja, Ick bin jutt”
This exchange doesn’t really contain “slang” (except, perhaps for the use of “alter”), but it is a representation of how we pronounce things vastly different.

  2. Thanks so much for this! I'm not sure if you did one on your own hometown's dialect, but that would be interesting, too….That way, you'd be sure to pronounce everything correctly! 😉

  3. Really cool video! My wife is a Berliner German and it’s funny that she even mentions that Berliners say stuff weird ! By the way I learned recently while in Sachsenhausen that there are 2 words for squirrel haha seriously love it

  4. Thank you for this. My Oma was from Berlin and my mother and I are from Stuttgart. I was 3 when we left and didn't go back for 12 years and my father didn't speak German. I have a southern accent now and can't roll my R's to save my life. Between trying to pronounce it like Oma (Berlin) told me, and trying to pronounce the way my mother (Stuttgart) told me… grrrr. I gave up. Now both have passed and I'm planning to join my family on my mothers side in retirement… has brought me here in hopes you can teach an old dog new tricks. 🙂 The video explained a lot for me and you're not so hard on the R's and I'm actually recalling a lot listening to you. Your resource and referral links have been great tools also. Hope 2019 is really good to you. I'll be watching . 🙂

  5. yes, in 2017 i visited, and could not understand the accent-dialect berlinerisch….from charlottenburg to mitte, let alone kreuzberg…:P
i have visited munich with no problem haha…
then going to postdam,. was told it was royal city

  6. I'm from Berlin and I know "Pillepalle" in a different way:
It's more like "not proper made" or "to weak".
Ex: "Das hier mit den kleinen Schrauben festmachen ist doch pillepalle. Das hält doch nie."
"To screw it tight with that small screws is pillepalle. That wont last (long)."

  7. Huh … ich war in meinem leben nur einmal in berlin, aber bis auf zwei wörter kenn ich alle, benutze die sogar recht oft … wusste nicht dass das berlinerisch ist 😀 Dachte immer pille palle / Paletti das nutzt doch jeder 😀
