Fans threaten boycott of Qatar World Cup over corruption, human rights | DW News

It’s just a year until the football World Cup kicks off in Qatar. Allegations of vote buying and human rights abuses have marred the run-up to the competition. Some fans are threatening a boycott. But Qatar says it deserves to host the cup.
The stadiums are all but ready with just a year to go until the Qatar World Cup. But many football fans are not yet ready to embrace the tournament.
Human rights groups say many thousands of migrant workers may have died building the stadiums and infrastructure.
They have also criticized the living conditions of workers as well as Qatar’s repression of women and homosexuals.
Qatar rejects the number of deaths and says it has done more than any neighboring country to improve worker welfare, including limits on working hours in the heat. But the likes of Amnesty Intentional are not convinced.
Qatar holding FIFA’s iconic tournament is also unpopular because of allegations it bought the hosting rights. Despite the US Department of Justice saying so, Qatar denies it.
But the controversies have led these fans in Europe to boycott the tournament. They are planning their own amateur version instead.
National sides such as Germany have also made their feelings clear. But there is no sign any teams will actually boycott the World Cup.
Proponents say Qatar has shown its commitment to football and Western arrogance is at play. Many in the Middle East and Arab World are proud to be hosting a first World Cup and only the second in Asia.
Its gas riches mean Qatar will put on a spectacular tournament but at a heavy price for many.

  1. Its too late to reschedule the World Cup, no country can efficiently prepare to host it now. Also, boycotting the World Cup in Qatar, the Winter Games in China and whatnot is only going to weaken ties and make trade, peace negotiations and everything else much harder to reach.

  2. This is the first World Cup I would be able to see. Easy visa travel rules for my country(Nigeria) to go to Qatar. I don’t even have to fear that my visa would be rejected. So I don’t care what any “activist”(who is probably European or American) says, I AM NOT BOYCOTTING THIS TOURNAMENT

  3. Boycotting Qatar FIFA WC and Beijing Olympics!

Don't give these countries your time or money, the Chinese use concentration camps and the Qatari government is corrupt and full of human rights abuses!

These are the LAST countries that should have been considered.

  4. you can believe all you want, but the true god doesn`t exist or the gods and all the thinks you make against freedom you are doing against yourself why, because all action whit out a individual interst, represent a waste of energy that is usless to the individual and at the end take out points the fact that not all individuals think these way make me think they have a less smart brain ans perhaps they are similar to other species that are less evolve why because the inteligence is the capacity to control the enviromenth and is not the other way other wise you would be a plant but I respect all the people after all I don`t live there and I really don`t care about that paralel universe
