Liberal Hypocrisy is Fueling American Inequality. Here’s How. | NYT Opinion

It’s easy to blame the other side. And for many Democrats, it’s obvious that Republicans are thwarting progress toward a more equal society.

But what happens when Republicans aren’t standing in the way?

In many states — including California, New York and Illinois — Democrats control all the levers of power. They run the government. They write the laws. And as we explore in the video above, they often aren’t living up to their values.

In key respects, many blue states are actually doing worse than red states. It is in the blue states where affordable housing is often hardest to find, there are some of the most acute disparities in education funding and economic inequality is increasing most quickly.

Instead of asking, “What’s the matter with Kansas?” Democrats need to spend more time pondering, “What’s the matter with California?”

  1. Hi, I'm Johnny Harris, one of the producers for this Opinion Video. I've always wondered why famously liberal states like California and Washington struggled to advance progressive policies, so I teamed up with NYT Editorial Board member Binya Appelbaum to get some answers. I'd love to know what most surprised you most in this video, or answer any questions you may have about how we made it — leave your comments below.

  2. Is anyone surprised by this? This is two NYT hard leftists echo-chambering for the end of local control, with decisions on stuff like housing density and taxes being given over to the Central Committee. Which, of course, is staffed by good Komsomol apparatchiks.

  3. And yet no mention of the disparity of the schools in the different zones , You can not legislate or finance morality or responsibility IE: needing more Single income family's back into society, moms(or dads) staying home and parenting these kids to do well in whatever school they attend. its kinda basic yet progressives vote Dem constantly, regardless of their hypocrisy. Conservatives seem to be walking the walk and hold their politicians to their promises!

  4. The problem is that you're looking at democrats, partisan politicians, as opposed to true liberals. You just have to look at the definition of liberal to understand that what we want is not what the democratic party wants, we just vote for them because what we truly believe in is not accessible in bipartisan America. The true liberals, Marxists, libertarians, and anarchists do not believe in partisan politics. We believe in a true democracy, without bureaucracy and authority entirely. Needless to say we can't vote somebody into office that will bring our values into fruition, that would be oxymoronic. A politician that wants to end the reign of politicians is never going to happen. Even Bernie Sanders is still a representative democratic socialist.

Just looking at your first example of affordable housing, there is no such thing as affordable housing when property is privatized. The entire world has been claimed, and you can't live on the millions of acres of unused rich land the Earth has to offer without shilling out everything you've earned. The democratic party alone cannot bring about the changes necessary to free America from the privatization of land.

Edit: You mentioned that Cook County has been gerrymandered so that the wealthiest town receives the most funding for education. I agree that this is a problem, but you also said that generally the entire county would be one district, this is not at all the case and I'm not sure where you've heard this. You just have to do a tiny amount of research to find that generally in urban and suburban areas school districts are divided by town as opposed to countywide. It's not a problem invented by the democrats of Cook County.

  5. And guess what would happen if people forced Congress to live where they represent. Pelosi is moving to a $25M mansion in Florida and DeBlasio (Warren Wilhelm) just bought a house in one of the reddest parts of PA. Shitholes for thee, but not for me.

  6. It's ABOUT TIME people (including blue voting people) are critical of their own party. Everyone needs to be held accountable. This 2 party system has been broken for decades and nothing gets done.

  7. Why don’t they take all the tax money for schools, then equally distribute it to all the schools. If parents want to improve the school further they can donate themselves.

  8. I don't identify as a progressive or anything left of liberal myself, but man oh man I will take any opportunity to post this song because if there's one common ground I can find with anyone on the political spectrum it is ragging on bougie liberal NIMBYists, patent holders of the self-powered back-patting machine.

  9. I'm surprised NYT realeased this video…finally we have some truths about the dems. this is why I vote 3rd party and dont wait for the left to do something..they never did. we've been left politically homeless

  10. Democrats response to this video “Change takes time because we’re dealing with historic and systematic racism and poverty that is still present everywhere in the United States”. Oh, and it’s Republicans fault too.

  11. If only people realized that “equality” just means that everyone will be poor, except for the ruling class. And that these “rulers” are really just a group of self indulgent loons with IQs that are 1 standard deviation above average.
