Did NATO promise Russia never to expand to the east? | DW News

Just before his army invaded Ukraine, Russian President Vladimir Putin outlined his motivations in a speech.

His main argument: NATO’s eastward expansion.

He blamed the extension of the military alliance ever closer to Russia’s borders and accused Western leaders of breaking alleged promises to never do so.

But experts disagree on whether that’s true.

  1. Russia is absolutl right west did lied openly and thet is reality.wat was in afganistan. Why west lost the war too afgan peoples.all natto was humilated.olso in vietnam and irag and .in siria whu care for wars nobady only war industry.profit.the planet is.full of wapons instef of food anf.peace

  2. when talking about Russia reversing democratic reforms and Putin's centralization of power, people choose to ignore the fact that it was triggered by "the west" shifting from dialog and compromise to doing what they wanted and ignoring old agreements and Russian concerns. To the point of small counties have the right to choose their own way, i don't disagree. My point is the power players like France and Germany could have easily predicted the consequences and chosen to keep improving the atmosphere of trust and cooperation with everyone, instead of taking advantage of voluntary weakness to strengthen their position and resuming the confrontation.

  3. Yeah, just as Biden promised not to let Ukraine use American rockets to attack Russian territory and Germany promised not to use, arm or send aggressions weapons to other countries. Where are we now?

  4. if Putin didn't want NATO expansion he surely made a big mistake invading Ukraine, considering NATO is now larger, more powerful and more unified than ever before – with countries like Sweden, Finland, and Denmark joining the alliance as a result of his barbaric assault on Ukraine… remember that not ONCE in its history have America or NATO ever attacked Russia

  5. Those comments or assurances were made to soviet russia. Not to current federal democratic russia that at some point even became a partner of nato

  6. Sovereign countries have a right to choose who they make alliances with Dictators let the power they have over their people go to their head along with the military might they have but in the global community that BS means very little and will result in their demise !
