How large is the discontent among Russia's political and security elite? | Conflict Zone

There are signs of growing discontent among the political and security elite in Moscow, as the war in Ukraine failed to give Russia the quick victory it wanted.

A small group of investigative journalists has managed to pierce the veil of secrecy around those officials.

Among them, Andrei Soldatov, founder and editor of the Agentura website which tracks Russia’s intelligence services.

In this week’s Conflict Zone, Soldatov tells host Tim Sebastian he doesn’t believe Russian President Vladimir Putin can survive the war in the long term.

“People inside (the security services) are really not happy with the way the war is going. And they blame just one guy — Vladimir Putin — for that,” he says.

Conflict Zone is Deutsche Welle’s top political interview.

Every week, our hosts Tim Sebastian and Sarah Kelly are face to face with global decision-makers, seeking straight answers to straight questions, putting the spotlight on controversial issues and calling the powerful to account.

  1. It is reassuring to know that Putin is not going anywhere soon. We need to give him enough time to destroy the Russian Federation for good. It is good to know he will singlehandedly ensure that Russia will never be a threat again!

  2. @RandCorporation published 2019 How to destroy Russia. Every measure of this war is described there, included USING UKRANIA AS A PIVOT. "" pAge 96 which provides for the use of UKRAINE to bring RUSSIA to war. ." From 2014 to 2016, the US provided $600 million in military aid to Ukraine and it could increase in quantity and quality. So Russia could counterattack by committing more troops pushing more masses into Ukraine. Russia Since the East is a burden for Russia, advancing further would only harm Russia. Even at the expense of the UKRAINIAN people – this could generate a disproportionate number of Ukrainian casualties, territorial losses and migratory flows – still, the US must sponsor the military deployments.

  3. No right thinking person no matter what age would murder a pregnant woman killing her and her unborn child, an newly born child. A young child, a handicap person,an elderly person and people who are infirm so no matter how much you love your son can you come to terms with that. Their lives have been denied to them. Get down on your knees and pray that the Ukraine soldiers do not do to you what your son and the rest of the Russian soldiers have done to the people of Ukraine. Russian soldiers have flattened Ukraine and killed thousands of innocent people all in the name of Putins war. If you get your sons back they will maybe tell you the truth.

  4. Russia did not plan for a long-term war. It knew the president of Ukraine and his government would flee. Now Putin knows that the war will be a long-term injury to his legacy. He wants to tire the Ukraine army and maneuver a negotiation that brings Kyiv under Moscow's watch than NATO. Putin dreams one day Ukraine will join the Russian-China military aliance.

  5. The West should work at spending the money to lure skilled working age Russians out of Russia and into the West. Offer them incentives, good paying jobs, things to help increase the brain drain and talent drain from Russia.

  6. WHAT SIMPLE PEOPLE AS I AM THINK ABOUT

IS IT NOT ENOUGH TOU YOU TO BE MUCH RICH THAN THOSE WHO SERVE A NATION ECONOMY PROGRESS ???? YOU LEADERS DICTATORS USE PEOPLE TO KILL NOT EVEN FOR THAST YOU SHOW THE FACE. GO, GO AMONG THEM IF YOU ENJOY KILLING

  7. WORST OF LOOSING THE BAD IS GAINING THE REBELLION OF A NATION FED UP OF THE SAME STUFF. WAKE UP RUSSIAN SIMPLE PEOPLE YOUR REGIME LEADERS ARE KILLING ARE COMMITING WAR HORRENDOUS CRIMES THEY SAY ON BEHALF OF YOUR NATION. HAVE THEY DONE A REFERENDUM AND YOU MAJORITY VOTED TO COMMIT GENOCIDE TO ANOTHER NATION ………??? I DOUBT YOU ARE SO RELIGIOUS…… JESUS SHRIST SAID '' LOVE OTHERS AS I DO LOVE YOU''

  8. Hurry up Russians depose this mad man and replace him with a decent current leader who wants peace and harmony with his fellow human race. The war is not necessary it is unjustified it is from a medieval mindset of one man Putin

  9. I’m sorry, but I’m Afraid the Russian population aren’t blameless in this fiasco…they bought in to this gangster state…look how the Arab nations rose up and kicked out their corrupt leaders…Russians should have done the same

  10. Russia is surrounded by peaceful progressive countries that have no ill will towards it so why all the hostilities ? Finland , Sweden , Moldova , Poland etc. America will never invade, so why don't the people get rid of this relic and live in peace . You wanna be like No. Korea ?

  11. Putin fell into the Trump-Trap. He encouraged a false narrative until it got larger than himself. bad news is that the false narrative doesn't need Trump/Putin to continue. Will the russian people move far enough left to avoid Putin II ? I guess we will see.

  12. For any normal nation it would have been so much easier to develop stronger ties of friendship which Putin destroyed through sheer stupidity and desire to be a Tsar.

  13. Let's matain the sansiones against Russia for at least 10 years at best for twenty years they don't deserve better at least antil the reconstruction of Ukraine

  14. The Russians are not the Russians of 50 years ago they will want to live in a normal western society and travel the world without the hassle there getting since this war started.. Someone will come out the woodwork and rid of this Tyrant.

  15. I doubt very much that anyone has reliable sources in the FSB. I don't know Mr Soldatov, but my impression after listening to the interview is that it has no predictive value, especially in his answer to the last question of the interview, regarding Vladimir Putin's capacity to remain in power.
