Russia claims fresh advances in Donbas +++ Grain talks in Turkey | DW News

Russia has said it now controls 97 percent of Luhansk — one of the two Ukrainian provinces that make up the Donbas.

The Kremlin has made taking the eastern region its number one objective in this phase of the war – and has been bombarding the city of Sievierodonetsk and surrounding areas. Ukraine’s president Volodymyr Zelenskyy says his forces are putting up a fierce defense and inflicting a heavy toll on Russia’s military.

Meanwhile, talks in Istanbul between Russia and Turkey’s top diplomats on how to get grain out of Ukraine have not yielded a breakthrough. Ukraine was not represented.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said Moscow was ready to ensure the safety of ships leaving Ukrainian ports. But Ukraine says it will not remove mines from waters around Odesa, citing the threat of Russian attacks.

Tens of millions of tons of wheat, corn and sunflower oil are trapped, after Russia blockaded Ukraine’s coastline three months ago. Both sides blame each other for laying sea mines off the Black Sea coast.

Our DW Correspondent Dorian Jones in Istanbul follows this meeting and had this update on possible outcomes of the talks.

  1. Corruption is widespread in Ukrainian society.[1][2] In 2012 Ernst & Young put Ukraine among the three most-corrupt nations from 43 surveyed—alongside Colombia and Brazil.[3][4] In 2015 The Guardian called Ukraine "the most corrupt nation in Europe".[5] According to a poll conducted by Ernst & Young in 2017, experts considered Ukraine to be the ninth-most corrupt nation from 53 surveyed.[6] According to Transparency International's 2021 Corruption Perceptions Index, (a scale of least to most corrupt nations), Ukraine

  3. France and Germany do not want a strong Eastern Europe. They are not a champions of democracy.

Putin has declared that he wants to conquer the lands that the Tsar of Russia occupied in 1914. Giving land to Russia will not stop anything. It will only delay it.

Germany appeases him. It's frankly embarrassing to be part of the west. It even looks like Germany and France have evil intent.
