Why Are Germans So Crazy About White Asparagus? Going Asparagus Harvesting To Find Out

Even the ancient Greeks, wealthy Romans and Emperor August were big asparagus fans. Presumably, the Romans with their expansionist campaigns were behind its quick spread in Europe, including in Germany. Today, Germany is one of the leading producers of asparagus in Europe. But why are Germans so crazy about the “white gold”?

Our reporter Brant Dennis visits an asparagus farm during harvest, to see what exactly makes this funny-looking vegetable so popular.

  1. I like those longer videos much better than those short ones. What a hard work! I would not be able to do it. Well done, Brad! On the other hand, I do not like asparagus. But indeed, it seems to be a big hype every year here in Germany. Strange….

  2. I expected a real answer where you actually ask people why. For me, white asparagus is just a seasonal vegetable but I still have a hard time understanding the hype and prefer many other vegetables over it.

  3. I am German and have lived here for 60 years. I hardly know anyone who is "crazy" about asparagus. Some like to eat it when it is season in may and june so as they eat gingerbread before christmas or mushrooms in autumn. Others reject it completely.

In addition, it has become very expensive these days.

  4. As a german I don't underdtand why white aspargus is so popular here? A lot of people call it white gold. But nearly the most tasting stuff is normaly the side dishes or the sauce. Compared to other vegetables totaly overrated. It just got good marketing.
Green aspargus has so much more taste of its own, but the people are already brain washed.
And the whole work is also done by underpaid foreign workers, since no german really wants to do this hard labour. That is typical german double standard.
