Abortion, guns, racism: Is the US still liberty's poster child? | To the Point

Liberty – it is the big American promise, a foundation of the American Dream – and it’s a beacon that shines around the world. But that American brand of liberty seems to be redefined, when millions of women find themselves suddenly deprived of their reproductive rights.

The supreme court has overturned the right to terminate a pregnancy, several states have already banned abortions outright. Ex-President Trump already hails it as a “divine decision”, while President Biden warns of a further erosion of civil liberties.

The USA in 2022, a nation deeply divided: over abortion, over guns, and by racism. Today, we ask: Is the US no longer the global poster boy of liberty?

Our guests: Emilia Roig (political scientist), Laura von Daniels (analyst), Erik Kirschbaum (journalist)

  1. At this rate I won't be surprised if the US makes slavery legal again in the name of "freedom" to own another human being

  2. "It's not the end of the world", well, it is the literal end of life for some, the end of health for many, the end of career and learning opportunities for some, and the end of self determination for all.
"It was a legal decision", by his own admission it was done by minority rule in a democracy. There are serious questions regarding the legality and constitutionality of not bringing Obama's nominee for the supreme court up for a vote to boot, but this episode's title is not about legality, it is about liberty, minority rule in a democracy is fundamentally antithetical to liberty and Erik Kirschbaum's shallow attempt to move the goalposts to legality was disingenuous at best. As Laura von Daniels said, a supreme court need not interpret law on the basis of majority opinion, but fundamentally this is irrelevant to the legitimacy of the US court in particular because so many of the judges were selected by people who themselves did not have a majority mandate to select those judges and received their position due to democratically destructive practices like gerrymandering. What's more, this is on top of the fact that they are overturning confirmed precedent, making the idea that it is a reasonable, let alone neutral, interpretation of law laughable.

  3. over time, i have found that talking about this with americans is a waste of time: typically, you will either talk with, let's say, the average new yorker, who will agree with you on most things, so it's like preaching to the choir; or you will stumble upon some backwards individual who is down with every step back into the dark past, and there's no way of convincing them otherwise. after all it's their country, it's up to the people in there to fight the good fight, if they want to. BUT don't try and convince the rest of the world you have a functioning democracy, because you don't.

  4. Erik is just wrong….soooo wrong…….his view is too rosey….he isn't factoring in disinformation which is a major game changer… gerrymandering which dilutes the options of the electorate to have fair representation….. And never in the history of the US have rights been rolled back. It set a dangerous precedent.

  5. Thank you ladies for having a great understanding of what is going on. It certainly feels like the end of Democracy!! We learned that it does matter who is elected. Women for sure are under attack.

  6. The USA was never a paragon of liberalism. Religious Groups and far right ideologists are far to influencial, blocking most kinds of social progress. Guns already have more rights when women. And due to a wide spread law of the jungle mentality, there's no prospect of positive change.

  7. If you refuse to humble yourself before Jesus Christ and call upon his name and ask him to save you with contrition, you will be cast into the lake of fire with no rest, day or night.
And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment: (Heb 9:27)
The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance. (2 Peter 3:9)
And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire. (Revelation 20:15)

  8. It seems like the male speaker is trying to normalize American politics. Yet, the obvious slide into ethno-nationalist illiberal populism on the Right has been concerning for some time. There are clear warning signs of further fundamentalism and power consolidation suggesting this trend is not part of a normal Left-Right political cycle, but could be a precursor to a theocratic and/or fascist seizure of power. The warning signs are unambiguous. Dismissing things like the loss of fundamental rights could be the turning point that prevented resistance, and resulted in complicity while it was still possible to prevent further downslide.

  9. abortion=illegal
    self/defense = natural right
    liberty is not freedumb
pro mice or pro miss ??
    Test=beacon insertion
WOMBmen have the rite to reproduce and not to kill life!

  10. DW should examine why Germany is still funding Russia while the Ukraine is getting destroyed. It shouldn't concern itself with domestic US policy that it won't understand nor give fair coverage to.

  11. I think US needs to have a look on the abortoin law to allow people that have been r..p.d or if the mothers life is in danger because pregnacy but, not a right just because two people did not took the right desitions and were not respnsable while having s..x. that is call being a mature person that is responsable of his or her desitions taken

  12. So, Pro-gun is now against liberty? Interesting. Whatever fits the narrative. Guns are an easy scapegoat for much more complicated, deeper lying issues. Healthcare, especially mental healthcare would help (if implemented properly, which the republicans again don't want).
A few select carefully crafted gun law restrictions could actually help, but usually they are just arbitrary bullying of gun owners without actually helping. Until that changes, there will not be progress.

  13. America's multi-billion dollar abortion industry has killed over 44 million people in America between 1973 & present via abortion, that's approximately 900, 000 people every year.

Approximately 1% of the abortions not only kill the fetus but also the mother.

To get some perspective on this America is up in arms about gun violence in our country we're mad about it, it's on the news every single day, there's protests about it, there's laws about it, debate on it, is so much conflict about it — it accounts for approximately 65,000 US deaths per year. For scale in 2021 there was over 650,000 deaths by abortion and 65,000 deaths by gun violence.

Both are bad, but one is unquestionable worse.

  14. on 2nd month fetus got his hands
on 4th month body shape completed
on7th month (1st day) soul enters into fetus
court need to decide why abortion is illegal?
because of fetus killing then killing only occurs when fetus is beyond 6th month
till 6th month (30th day) it is as good as cutting a cell from your own cell
e.g. cutting nail or cutting tiny part of skin
till 6th month the life is life of mother and just a shape has been formed. it becomes a new life from 1st day of 7th month.

  15. Abortion is NOT illegal in the US. That's all bs. The states now handle legislation regarding abortion. The states are run by the people through their elected representatives. If you don't like how they are representing you. Vote them out of office. This is the way it was intended to work. Power to the people, not the centralized federal government.
